Memorial Day: Part 1

Today, I celebrated the military personnel that lost their lives in the U.S. by baking some chocolate chip cookies, concocting my witch mask/Shrek mask/whatever you want to call it, and grilling some finger-licking-lemon-garlic chicken. This post is dedicated to the beginning of the day, when I made some chewy, chocolatey cookies.

As you probably know, many recipes call for room-temperature eggs. As you also know, if you have been keeping up with the blog, we got a clutch of chicks. My sister and I were placing one chick in each robe pocket to keep them nice and warm. Archie, my sister’s dog (shown last or on the right), caught on to this big time. He wanted more than anything to get a taste of that chick…just a taste.

Is it chick or it is egg? Archie was begging for answers…

As for the room-temperature eggs, I used the same warming tactic. Notably, Archie is also impassioned by raw eggs because he got a taste once and has not since forgotten. So when he got a whiff of the bulge in my pocket, he was extremely curious and incensed. Could it be a delicious chick? Or could it be a mouth-watering egg? To say the least, the anticipation of knowing what lay in the depths of my robe pocket was absolutely killing him. At last, once the egg was properly warmed, Archie was satisfied to find out that it was indeed an egg, only to be very exasperated seeing it going into a bowl for a recipe meant, yet again, for human consumption.

Hope you enjoyed the blog! I will be posting soon with part 2 of Memorial Day; I have a lot of material for the day that I don’t want to cram into one post. Tchau!

Chick Delivery!

Welcome back to my blog! Get ready to feast your eyes on some cuteness…

A couple of weeks ago, my mom picked up her new clutch of chicks, shipped all the way down from bumble-cluck Michigan. She opted to get the variety pack, complete with a few black, a few white, some brown and spotted, and a couple dusty gray. We were told to handle them as much as possible, so they aren’t quite so chicken. You have to expect to be simultaneously pooped on, though, which happened quite a few times.

The chicks huddled together, trying to stay warm.

The chicks lived under a red light for a few weeks and were recently transferred to the outdoor chicken pen, into their own little house. We have to separate the chicks and hens for now; the older girls are pretty protective of their space at this point. “You know women”, my mom said.

I will keep you updated with the chicks, and yes, I know this is a food blog and these chicks aren’t food…I guess my only retort is that they could be. See you soon. Tchau!

Mother’s Day Pt. 2 – Eric’s Smoker

Hey…Sydney! And all future readers! Right now it’s just me, but that’s alright. Blog fame takes time…

Anyway…the long awaited Part 2 of Mother’s Day. As I mentioned in the previous post, Dad came home from the shore, which was great, and everyone was home for the first time in a long time. Eric was the chef for dinner and made some really tender and flavorful ribs…with the help of the handy smoker.

I Want My Baby Back, Baby Back…Ribs!

Eric modeling right after he beat his meat (with spices)
Eric prepping the spray bottle that he will use to douse the slab of meat.
Wood soaking: This wood needs to be soaked to maintain the slow burning mechanism of the smoker

Above, Gretchen and Caroline are spraying the rib rack with the apple cider vinegar formula that Eric concocted. Next, Eric placed the slab on the smoker. After that, it’s a waiting game…

Eric’s Thoughts on the Smoking Process

“The most delicious juices are found at the bottom”

“The sweetest meats are those left unspoilt”

“Never trust a boy to do a man’s job”

“Never trust a bat boy to do Batman’s job. #Batsoup #WuhanChina

“I’m channeling my inner smoker”

You’ll notice how Eric alludes to the corona virus that is forcing us all inside. He mentions bat soup, the alleged cause of the corona virus outbreak that is said to have started in Wuhan, China.

That is the conclusion of this blog entry! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed, despite how short it was. Come back next time to see the delicious and mouth-watering dish that I prepared for Memorial’s Day.

Tchau!

Mother’s Day

This year’s Mother’s Day was on May 10th. All of the children were at home. Lauren and Matt came over early in the morning and we got a shocking visit from our estranged father! He is normally holed up down at our beach house because he is trying to evade corona virus. He has been taking advantage of his beached-quarantine; I think he’s secretly loving his self isolation…lots of time for Netflix, beach walks, and his famous margaritas.

The day started off with a delicious meal cooked by yours truly. Caroline also graciously helped prepare part of the meal…what an angel!

Breakfast: Omelets and Homefries
Preparation
Omelet Ingredients: Diced Tomatoes, Diced Onions, Chopped Up Mushrooms, and Grated Cheese.
Also a whopping 18 eggs whisked up with salt and pepper.

In the process of making omelets. A strenuous process…you have to make sure that pan is hot, but not too hot. Also don’t get distracted and leave the omelet on the pan too long! One self-recommendation for next time is to pre-cook the mushrooms and onions so that they aren’t too hard in the omelet.

The Final Product!

Omelet, prepared by me, with some delectable homefries crusted in garlic, prepared by Cline.

Beautifully arranged photo here by Cline, too. Vined-tomato touch by myself. Gorgeous! Glass of orange juice in the back is icing on the cake (though I didn’t get any). We used some of the orange juice illegally the night before to mix with Hennessy *puke*. Cue insert photos from the night before:
Cline loling at something that we were talking about, and Favi, holding his head, obviously dumbfounded at something Mom said.Nat looking increduously at Mom. By the way, mom absolutely refused to be included in this blog, so I will have to crop her out of all photos.Archie (Jules’ dog) resting his head on the table, wondering what the hell is going on!
Next post will be about Eric’s epicly SMOKED dinner. Until next time!
